Our Featured Adult Rider of the Month is Patricia (Patti) Inskip!

Among many great things, what stands out about Patti is that she deeply respects and appreciates the horses and understands their strength and power. She has a deeper connection with them. She is patient and careful but up for any challenge!

Patti has a lifetime of experience with horses, and they are an incredibly important part of who she is. She shared:“This is always so difficult for me to articulate. I just know that during the times in my life when horses were not present, there was an intangible hollowness. Horses nourish my spirit, they keep me physically engaged and they challenge me to plan ahead and think critically, sometimes under pressure. I marvel at their grace, and how little they ask for, in exchange for all they give.”

Patti’s background in riding is western. She started riding at Lancers in 2022 when life changes found her having to move back to the city. “I was attracted to Lancers because I wanted the challenge of a different discipline. I also wanted the structure of a program that would fill the holes in my horse knowledge as I haven’t had the benefit of proper coaching since I was a kid riding at Windgate farms many years ago.”

Patti values the “altruistic intent” and core values that runs through the Lancer program as they align with her beliefs: “Lancers’ barn has been my sanctuary in a very recently unsettled life. When I unhook that chain at the door, the dirt of the day falls away and I am instantly restored and revitalized.” Patti has enjoyed riding and learning from all of the horses, especially Oliver, Fawkes, Giquau and Ava Jane who have helped her gain confidence in an English saddle.

Patti beautifully described two experiences of “Lancer magic” – a beautiful moment when we catch a glimpse or feel of something that makes Lancers special. “I experienced Lancer magic at the recent Musical Ride performance. I was helping with pony rides and this tiny child walked up to have their turn. I could see the trepidation on their face. I slowly stepped off and as we turned the first corner I looked up to check on our passenger and the child’s grin was enormous!” She added, “I have also experienced Lancer magic more personally. It’s in the hushed moments, when the work, the mistakes and redirection culminate in a few strides of perfect communion. It’s as if the only sense that has meaning is feel.”

We are so grateful for Patti’s positive attitude and the energy she brings to Lancers. We look forward to more years with her as a Lancer!
