Since 1936, Lancers has made horses and riding accessible to children in Halifax. As Canada's only urban non-profit riding school and equine therapy centre, our mission is to build better lives through horses.
Our Featured Junior Rider of the Month is Fiala Yarbrough!
Fiala grew up in Vancouver and has spent most of her life around horses. Fiala had a break from riding when her family moved to Halifax, so she was very excited to join Lancers in September 2022. “I wanted to join a program like Lancers where there is a great focus on horsemanship, and I was looking to get back into my favorite sport.”
When Fiala started riding at lancers she was older than some of the riders in her group and she organically took on a leadership role. She has been a great role model for those around her. She is very willing to learn, challenge herself, and lend a hand. Fiala's favorite horse right now is Rupert - she appreciates the lessons he has to offer, and of course because of he is adorable and has a silly personality.
“What I enjoy most about Lancers is the community! Everyone is so supportive and friendly, and it’s so nice to learn from the more experienced riders and to have so many friends with the same interests as me. I love how much focus Lancers has on horsemanship and improving riding outside of the saddle. One of my favorite memories from Lancers is Salmon River camp, because it’s such a great opportunity to spend time with the horses and friends. I enjoyed taking care of my horse for the week, riding daily, and getting to know other Lancers better! Angie does a great job of organizing such a fun experience.”
Fiala is a joy to have in the barn all the younger riders look to her as someone they can always count on for support. She takes her responsibilities very seriously and has learned so much and improved her skills since joining Lancers.
