Our Featured Volunteer of the Month is Carolyn Buhr!

Carolyn is a relatively new volunteer to Lancers, beginning in the Therapeutic Riding Program in spring 2023 after seeing an Instagram post. Her horse experience had been limited to annual highlight trail rides during childhood vacations in PEI. However, she has always been entranced by the Horses of Halifax and has never missed an opportunity to pass by Lancers to see  if the horses are turned out. When a son started dating a Lancer rider some years ago, the profile of the organization was elevated further ... .and a special prom-posal at the barn is now part of family lore.

After retiring as a family doctor in early 2021, Carolyn was looking for volunteer opportunities that supported healthy outcomes for a range of people and Therapeutic Riding seemed an excellent fit. She is enjoying learning the ropes of hands-on horse care and tacking as well as picking out the arena and stalls. Seeing the enthusiasm and growth of HLTR riders has been very gratifying.

She has only gotten to know the HLTR horses so far but particularly loves the gentle and patient personalities of Fawkes and Bud.

Carolyn also is a volunteer tutor for newcomer English at the Central Library, is working on her tennis game, swims in the summer and skates on the Oval during the winter months.

Our Therapeutic Riding Program could not run without the help of many  volunteers. People like Carolyn who are so committed to the role have a huge impact on our horses and riders. Thank you Carolyn for all that you do!
