JumpStart/RecKids

The Jumpstart/RecKids Program is a joint effort between HRM Community Recreation Services and the Canadian Tire Jumpstart Program to provide recreation opportunities to children, youth and families in financial need.

Jumpstart is designed to provide assistance to those who, due to lack of funds, would otherwise be unable to participate in sport, art, cultural, and recreation activities. At this time, HRM supports registered non-profit organizations only and as Lancers is a non-profit, eligible families can apply to Jumpstart to be able to participate in Lancer programs.

Please note that you must apply directly to JumpStart and if approved JumpStart will cover all or a portion of program fees at Lancers.

Individuals approved for JumpStart will also qualify for a reduced rate for camps.

LUCY CUTHBERTSON MEMORIAL FUND

In February 2005, Lucy Faith Cuthbertson, at the age of 24, died of meningitis in London, England. In memory of their beloved daughter and sister, Brian, Lindsay, and Richard have established, in association with the Halifax Junior Bengal Lancers, the Lucy Cuthbertson Memorial Fund. As a young girl, Lucy joined her older brother as a rider with the Lancers. Her love of horses and riding meant that she literally grew up at Lancers, becoming a qualified instructor for young riders. As well as riding Lucy played basketball for St. Patrick's High School and for the University of King's College. While completing her Masters in Economics at McGill University, she was a stalwart member of the Triathlon Club.

The Cuthbertson Family and the Lancers have signed an Agreement that the annual income from the Fund will be used each year to help fund selected children's riding fees at Lancers. Lancers will teach the fundamentals of riding and recipients are expected to take an active role in the care of horses, which will help to develop a strong sense of responsibility and self-respect.

The Nova Scotia Amateur Sport Fund has approved the fund and its purposes, enabling contributions to qualify as charitable donations under the Income Tax Act. In order to be deductible as a charitable donation, contributions to the Fund must be made payable to the Nova Scotia Amateur Sport Fund.

To many the words, love, hope, and dreams are synonymous with horses.
