We are very appreciative of our location in downtown Halifax and love to share the joy of horses with the public. We have a number of annual events for the public to engage with the Horses of Halifax. We hope you to see you there!
Open House (Autumn)
Every October, we host a large Open House where we invite the public to come for a tour of the stables, meet the horses, and watch the final Musical Ride performance of the year. After the performance, we offer pony rides free of charge. This is the only time of the year when non-members can “ride” the Lancer horses so make sure to mark your calendar!
Musical Ride Performances (October & July)
The Musical Ride is a defining event in both the Lancer calendar and Lancer spirit. The Musical Ride consists of sixteen junior riders who train, on foot and horseback, for seven months each year to perform a choreographed ride to music. The Lancer Musical Ride was established in the late 1930s and was formed with the idea of being a child version of the RCMP Musical Ride. The Musical Ride has performed across Canada and in the United States and has had the honour of opening for the RCMP Musical Ride a number of times (most recently, on the Garrison Grounds in Halifax in 2017). Our big "home" performances are on Canada Day and the October Open House.
Doors Open (June)
We are a proud participant in the Halifax Doors Open weekend in early June. We are thrilled that the stables are always one of the most popular venues in the city! On your tour given by our junior and adult riders, you will learn about the history of Lancers and the stables as a historic site in the city. Tour highlights include seeing the charred beams in the hayloft from the devastating 1942 fire, visiting our indoor riding arena (which people often don't know we have), and of course, meeting all of our very beloved Horses of Halifax! The Downtown Horse Show (July)
Did you know that Halifax hosts an urban horse show each July? Riders from Lancers and other riding stables from across the province come into the city for a day and compete in hunter and jumper classes! It is a fantastic chance to see horses in action and experience the excitement of competition and best of all, spectating is free!
Daily lessons (Year-round)
When the weather is fair, our riders will have lessons outside in the outdoor arena from 4:30pm until 9:30pm. Our riders and horses love to see all the visitors at our fence line and often stop to take a moment to say hi!
