March Break and Summer
Beginner Riding Camps
March 18-22, 2019
July 2 - August 9, 2019 (Six sessions)
Join us for March Break camp or one of the six weeks of summer camp from July till mid-August.
Our summer camps are designed to introduce boys and girls aged 8 to 12 with little-to-no horse or riding experience to the basics of horse care and English riding. All riding lessons are taught by Equine Canada and NCCP certified instructors. Camp counsellors are highly experienced riders and horse people and are all First Aid certified.
Children will learn how to groom, tack up, feed, and clean up after their horses and have two lessons per day with a maximum of eight riders in each. All this is done in a structured, supervised, and fun setting with lots of equestrian-themed games. Parents will see their children’s confidence blossom as they develop skills to communicate with these very large, but kind-hearted animals.
Experience Lancers’ Beginner Camps
First, riders prepare their horses for their lesson by grooming and tacking up. Campers have two riding sessions a day and then clean up after their lesson is over. When not riding, children have in-barn lessons where they learn the parts of the horse and tack, as well as important safety considerations and barn rules. Games are played on and off horseback, especially horse-marking trivia and the famous Lancer game, “Capture the Brush”. A highlight of the camp is when riders get to try vaulting! Musical Ride drills like the “banana split” are also classic Lancer favourites. Throughout the summer camp week, campers will also have chance to enjoy their packed lunches in the Public Gardens and the Citadel as well as a trip to the Museum of Natural History. Camp goes on rain or shine as we have indoor and outdoor riding facilities!
Acquiring New Skills
By the end of the week, campers will be able to walk and trot a horse and will have learned valuable skills in grooming and riding safety. They will also hone their verbal and non-verbal communication skills and gain confidence in their own abilities. Most of all, they will make lasting memories and new friends (equine and human!) in the heart of downtown Halifax. The week ends with a fun show on Friday afternoon where riders can show off their new skills to their families. Each child will even receive a certificate of achievement at the end of the camp.
Registration and Rates
The cost of each week-long camp is $400.00, and they run from 9:00am to 4:00pm Monday to Friday. Early drop-off (8:00-9:00am) and late pick-up (4:00-5:00pm) options are available for a small additional fee. Short weeks, consisting of four days due to holidays, are $320.00.
Registration for our camps is always very popular and fills up extremely quickly. To register for our 2019 sessions, download the registration forms and submit the completed paper forms as well as a $50 cash/cheque deposit per child once registration opens. Registration will not be complete nor confirmed unless forms and the $50 deposit are received by the office. We are unable to process e-transfer or credit/debit card payments. To keep registration fair, any forms submitted to the office before registration opens will be voided. Submit your registration package to the stables office at 1690 Bell road.
