For Renewal and Enhancement of Facilities

The Need

Renovations and improvements to our stables, our indoor arena and our outdoor riding ring are needed to permit us to continue to serve our many program participants: children and adults, able bodied and challenged.

The "Stables", built in 1908 are in need of renewal. Our primary goals are to bring the building up to code, restore the exterior and undertake interior repairs and functional improvements. The Provincial Fire Marshall and Municipal authorities have identified significant shortcomings in the physical infrastructure including lack of wheelchair accessibility, inadequate washroom facilities and rot and decay in the windows, roof and exterior. In addition, we plan to enlarge the stables to better accommodate program requirements.

Our riding programs are limited during the winter months because the outdoor ring cannot be used when the ground is frozen and the existing indoor riding arena is too small to allow us to provide a full equestrian program. We plan a forty-foot extension to the indoor arena in order to overcome this limitation. The extension will also connect the stables to the arena providing direct covered access between the buildings. The existing outside riding ring is to be relocated to the stable side of Bell Road, due to the construction of the new high school.  This relocation is scheduled to occur in the spring of 2006.

Scope of the Project

Our renewal and enhancement project includes:

1. Renewal and Enlargement of the Stables - including replacement of windows and fascia; replacing the existing single washroom, built in 1940, with two new washrooms, one wheelchair accessible and barrier-free;and construction of a 40 by 60 foot addition to house new horse stalls and new service facilities.

Phase 1 - "The Link" was completed in 2003.  This included 2 washrooms, 2 wash stalls, a new locker room, a new mounting area for HALTR riders, and a manure bin.  Also 2 new stairways were constructed to the 2nd floor of the barn.  In 2004 the sofits and fascia were replaced, a new door and windows were installed on the north side of the barn and the stables were painted.  In 2005 new structural beams and columns were added to the stables and new stalls were built on the west side of the barn.

 2. Enlargement of the Indoor Riding Arena - the adjacent indoor riding arena, will be extended by 20 feet on each end, which will significantly increase its functionality. Overall, covered access to the adjacent stable and the observation gallery will be added.  Is planned for 2006-2007.

3. New Outdoor Riding Ring - A new outdoor paddock is to be built on the stable side of Bell Road in 2006.  This is to accomodate the construction of a new High School on the Community College site.

4. Streetscape and Signage - improved landscaping and signage to complement the historical and equestrian attributes of the renewed facility.

Each of our project's components is independent and lends itself to phased implementation to suit operational priorities and funding availability.
